Pulling out the big guns

Ok this may sound silly, but I feel like I’m pulling out the big guns now, having to pack my 3-year-old’s lunch 4 times a week for school.  I never have a problem figuring out what to give him for lunch when we are home, but now that I have to think about it ahead of time and make sure that he’ll eat it, I feel the pressure.

Monday will be my first day packing lunch for Jax. I’m trying to come up with ideas since he’s pretty picky.

So far, I’ve come up with the following:

  • hard boiled eggs
  • tuna w/ crackers
  • turkey slices
  • roast beef slices
  • cheese
  • yogurt
  • applesauce
  • cucumbers w/ dressing for dipping
  • hummus and pretzels
  • cut up fruit
  • cut up hot dog
  • peanut butter and jelly sandwich
  • crackers and cheese
  • mini bagel and cream cheese
  • leftover chicken from dinner (since it’s pretty good cold)

Anyone have any other good ideas?

Comments:

  1. I do a lot of your suggestions for N's pre-school (she's out for summer, but I'll be packing two lunches pretty soon!!).
Here are some other thoughts (I always pack several things for her:

I always have a box of uncrustables in the freezer in case I'm being lazy about lunch packing
pasta salad or just leftover pasta
    pretzels w/cream cheese
    diced fruit
    pudding
tortilla pinwheels (tortilla with some mustard, ham or turkey, cheese, and then rolled up and sliced thin like coins)
    nutragrain bars
    crasins
  2. See, my boy is so picky, he will not eat pasta or pasta salad. He likes mac-n-cheese, but I will have to find out if they can heat it up for him - it's probably gross cold. The tortillas are a great idea, but again, he won't eat them!!! I will add nutragrain/granola bars to my list. He also loves fruit leather and pudding....yeah!! Thanks. Keep those ideas coming. I want to make sure I pack a good variety daily so he at least has some choices.
  3. I like to pack a variety too, so she will at least like something in that lunch box. Will he eat pizza? You could do a healthier version on whole wheat pita bread... just a thought. What about string cheese, or those cheese sticks?
I know at least at N's school that if she's not eating her lunch they will either encourage her to eat or give her some leftover snack (they get a mid-morning snack at her school). They don't want the children going hungry either. A friend of mine's dd (who is in N's class) is a very picky eater, and they are more than willing to heat things up, etc., to try to help her.
  4. Yes, he likes pizza (most of the time) and LOVES cheese sticks/string cheese. He gets mid-morning snack at school too and the teachers really are great....they give him some extra if I am ever a couple of minutes late or they start lunch early and the kids have already started eating. I'm sure I am worrying over nothing. If it's the only thing in front of him, I'm sure whatever I pack, Jax will eat. It's not like I'll pack anything I know he doesn't like....
  5. oh, I get worried about it too - still, and N will be starting her 3rd year this fall. I just have to remind myself that she rarely eats much at any one sitting, even at home. But it's still fun to try to find something that they enjoy. Good luck to J next week! How exciting for him (and you!!!)
  6. omg, I think I may have gone a little overboard packing his lunch. I was so worried about it, that I kept throwing more stuff in. I doubt he is going to finish it all.

~2 rice-cakes with peanut butter and jelly (that is too much already)
    ~an individual serving of applesauce
    ~cheese stick
    ~cut up orange
    ~pretzels
    ~cookies

Well, at least I know he had a lot to choose from.
  7. Of course if some one else's mommy forgot to pack them a lunch then he can always share.
