Potty Training Days 6 and 7

I can’t believe we’ve only been at this for a week. It seems like Jax is is doing so well and that he’s been wearing underwear for a long time! On the other hand, the novelty of it definitely has not worn off yet. He still gets super excited over his “character” underwear (Speedracer, dinosaurs, Lightning McQueen, Mater, and the rest of the Cars gang).

I have several pairs of solid colors and striped underwear for him, but he is not too keen on wearing them. Prime example: yesterday I had him wear a pair of solid white ones in the morning and he was literally ticked off about it. He was complaining that he wanted to wear his other undies and then next thing I know, he is pooping in them.  He comes right up to me, tells me he pooped in his underwear and needs to change it. He says, “now I can wear my Luigi and Guido ones”.  Huh!

Other than that, we had no accidents yesterday. Today, he had one. We had just spent about 2 hours outside and he was helping us clean up the backyard and then we went in the pool. He was swimming and jumping around for over an hour and was totally worn out. He peed a couple of times outside before we went inside and put on his underwear. Then, we were sitting at the table having lunch and all of a sudden he says “oh no, I peed in my pants. I peed in my pants”. He couldn’t even finish lunch, he was just ready for a nap. I put a diaper on him and he slept for over 2 hours.

The rest of the day was great. No accidents. The only thing I’ve noticed is that I feel like I have to ask him all the time if he has to go potty. I see him squirming and so I ask him and he says no…..but then I coax him and we go to the toilet and of course he goes…..sometimes A LOT! I just wonder why he doesn’t initiate going more often. Maybe if I stop asking him, he’ll have to tell me or just go himself?!? Obviously I’m new at this so I just don’t know.

I’m also still real anxious to see when he will decide to go #2 in the potty.  He hasn’t been going daily since we started potty training, once was early morning in his diaper and the other two times he went in his underwear. We’ve been reading the book Everyone Poops every night before bed by his choice so I’m hoping it will sink in soon!

  1. Lol at him intentionally going in his underwear to get new ones! A little girl I know used to do that, too. She would pee to get clean princess undies.

I think at this point (until he's really good at telling you on his own) you should keep asking him. In my experience, I always needed to trust my intuition, especially at the beginning. If ds says no, I have always taken his word for it, but occasionally I've asked (knowing that he hasn't gone in hours) and he'd say no & then it's like my mentioning it brought his attention to his bladder & he just couldn't hold it in any longer and would have a small accident minutes after I asked. I always wanted to say, "See? I knew you had to go!"

I think a big part of it is not wanting to stop playing to go potty. I know 4 & 5+yos who still need to be asked, as they're dancing the potty dance while finishing up something they're working on....

Many times I don't quite ask, I just announce that it's time to potty, like it's time to go to the grocery store or make some lunch. If he objects, I honor that & don't force him. He's really good about it all now, though, and tells me or goes on his own. The only accidents we have are while he's asleep at night, maybe 1-2 times a month.
  2. Oh, and I have always liked Gymboree underwear for ds. They have all different prints (we have various animals & cars) and they go on sale pretty often. They're not the same as character prints, but ds gets excited about many of them (of course he had to wear the fire truck ones when we went to the fire station, ha!).

Shoot, they have a ton of cute ones right now! He SO doesn't need any more underwear!
  3. My niece LOVES that book Everyone poops...my poor sister has to read it several times a day...lol and they watch the dvd Elmo Potty Time....
