Fans With Sleeping Babies May Reduce SIDS Risk

“Findings of the Kaiser Permanente study released Monday suggest that using a fan while a baby is sleeping can reduce SIDS risk by 72 percent, athough the fan is to be used in conjunction with recommendations from earlier studies, such as having babies sleep on their backs.

Conducted by the Division of Research of Kaiser Permanente Northern California, the study included 497 infants in 11 counties, including Santa Clara, Alameda, San Mateo and Monterey. There were 185 SIDS death cases in the study.

Scientists still do not know the exact mechanisms that cause SIDS, but this study suggests that a fan circulating air while the baby is sleeping reduces the risk of SIDS primarily because the carbon dioxide the baby breaths out is recirculated around the room and not reinhaled by the baby.”

  1. Interesting! It could also be that they don't get overheated with a fan blowing. Supposedly getting too hot is a risk factor as well. Looks like we'll be turning that fan on tonight!
  2. Interesting!!

You know, it makes sense.... I alway sfeel liek I sleep better and breathe better and easier with a fan on.. so their theories/findings make sense...
  3. I have always had some sort of fan in K's room, but I will have to remember this for the next one.
  4. That's great to know; we use a fan anyway for the noise, but I sometimes turn it toward the wall b/c I'm worried that it will be too cold if it blows toward the crib. I guess that still counts, right??
  5. I haven't read the article yet but I remember reading something about this when panicking over SIDS with my first baby.

Yeah I think it has a lot to do with the air circulation or something since they think with SIDS they tend to breathe in their own carbon dioxide from breathing out... since they don't move around much.
  6. I'm totally guessing here, but I was thinking that the fan's air blowing over the body parts of the baby, particularly oscillating fans, causes the baby to twitch or move or breath and in that moment in time causes them to make a reaction that essentially keeps them out of the zone that would cause SIDS.
  7. That's a neat theory, too. It all makes sense to me!
