3 year old boy has NEVER slept!

Ok, and I thought I had it rough with sleeping issues. This has to be one of the most unbelievable and sad stories I’ve ever heard. I honestly just can’t imagine. I don’t understand how a person can function with zero sleep. I would love to hear more on this story, but there aren’t many details out right now.

A St. Petersburg, FL TV station reports on a family with a 3-year-old boy who has a rare medical condition, called chiari malformation that puts pressure on the brain and that prevents him from sleeping. His parents must watch him around the clock, taking turns to sleep during the day.

Rhett has never taken a nap or gone to sleep at night, forcing his parents to keep watch day and night.

“(My husband) has the day shift and I kind of have the afternoon shift,” mother Shannon Lamb said. “We share the night shift because no one can sleep in the house when he is up anyway.”

Lamb said she is working extra to pay for Rhett’s large medical bills. She also said her husband, David, has given up his job to care for their child.

  1. I just forwarded that to some of my family members/friends b/c they won't believe it. I am so depressed for that family!!!!!
  2. That is unbelievable! I feel so sad for them! I've been complaining to DH about Abbie's night-wakings, and she's a better sleeper than B was. I guess it takes seeing someone worse off than yourself to really appreciate what you have, eh?
  3. Aww that is sad. It is a wonder that he can even function. I hope that the surgery works and he can enjoy a normal childhood.
  4. we watch Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, and they built a new house for a family that the mother and three daughters all have chiari malformation.

they didn't mention anything about not being able to sleep, but then again the episode was from October 2007, so they could have mentioned it, and i just don't remember.

but I don't think I will be complaining about not getting any sleep at night anymore!
  5. G's a bad sleeper, but that's more than enough to make me thankful for the sleep he does get. I can't even imagine.
  6. That is so sad. I seriously can't see how he is still alive. Sleep is vital for the brain, heart, and resp. system. I hate it for the parents. That has to be like living in a nightmare.
  7. I saw something recently about a similar condition that kicks in later on in life and it eventually kills the people who have it. I can't see how he is still alive either, how scary.
  8. How sad. I can't believe he can function at all. I hope the procedure works.
