It’s 2027 and everyone is sterile…

A quick warning to those of you who may want to see the movie Children of Men, you might not want to read this because it’s a spoiler.

So, it’s the year 2027 and everyone is sterile. Or so the world thinks. Out of the entire female population, one young woman is pregnant with the first child to be born in 18 years. It’s not really explained why the whole world is infertile, but my husband and I concluded it was due to pollution and radiation from nuclear bombs. This isn’t a movie review and I’m making my explanation very basic, but there was something in this film that bothered me so much I had to share.

Picture this scene. The world is barren. Everything is dark and gloomy. People are fighting and shooting each other and blowing up everything in sight. People are chasing the one fertile woman on the planet. She just gave birth in a dingy old room with the help of some guy. It’s very primal, yet once the baby is born and wrapped in coat and handed to the mom, she doesn’t put it to her breast.

Then, she is running for her life with this child and the baby is crying and crying and crying. Everyone hears it, but again, she doesn’t put it to her breast.

And then, she is on a boat with the baby, and it’s crying again, and AGAIN she doesn’t put the darn baby to her breast. I don’t get it. There was no formula, no bottles, the baby has to eat. I’m not saying they needed to highlight breast feeding, but it would have been totally natural and would have made perfect sense to just briefly show it.

I don’t know why it bugged me as much as it did, but I was like really annoyed and even angry about it. Did anyone else see this movie? Did you notice this too? What did you think?
