My son is exactly 28 months old and he just had his very first sleep over away from Mommy and Daddy last night. I’ve been ready for a while but we were waiting until we were pretty sure our son would be ready. We had a party last night so we planned it out that J (DS) would sleep at my parents’ house. He spends a lot of time with them and loves being with them so I wasn’t worried about that. Last weekend he and I slept at their house for 2 nights because my husband was in the hospital, so I think that got him used to the idea as well.
My parents picked J up from our house last night to take him to dinner and he made a small fuss to go. Normally he is eager to leave with them, but I had told him he was sleeping there so he was a bit apprehensive. It took about 5 seconds for my dad to get him to laugh and all was fine. Turns out our son sleeps better at his grandparents’ house than he does out ours.
Meanwhile, I had a terrible night sleep. I was up every few hours wondering if he was ok, if he was crying for me, and if my parents were totally exhausted. I called at 7:45 a.m. (couldn’t help myself) and heard everything was fine, so I went back to sleep for a little bit. It was the most relaxed I felt ALL night!
My husband and I went out for breakfast as a twosome, which is something we haven’t done since I was pregnant. It was so nice!!!
I feel so good knowing that my son is totally fine away from us. Heck, he even put up a fight when we tried to take him home. We literally took him kicking and screaming, but once we got home, he was fine. He was just tired and needed a nap.
It might sound weird, but I honestly feel like a new phase of my life is starting. I said to my mom, “you can handle that once a month, right?” and she said “definitely”!
Hopefully my sleeping will improve because I’ll know he’s fine. Now we just have to try it with the other set of grandparents in a few weeks and see how that goes. Wow – I might actually have 2 nights a month alone with my hubby!!!
