Baby Otter Swim Lessons

I finally made the call.

In addition to the horrible statistics:
• Drowning is the #1 cause of death for children ages 1 to 4 in Florida.
• 75% of victims are ages 12 to 25 months old.
• 65% drown in the family pool.
• 33% drown in a neighbors’ or relatives’ pool.
• For every child that drowns, 4 are hospitalized for near drowning.
• 77% were missing less than 5 minutes.

I just want my baby to know how to save himself if he falls in the pool……and I want him to enjoy the water as much as I did as a kid. We live in Florida. That is what kids do here. They spend their days in the pools and at the beach.

Jax will be 2 in a month and we have taken him in our pool quite frequently, but we are not qualified to teach him survival skills. Lately he has gotten extremely bold and goes onto our first and second pool step by himself. He also thinks it’s funny to run around the pool. I am terrified of this. Not that he will ever be outside alone, but that isn’t the point. So, I am waiting to hear back from the Baby Otter Swim School so we can schedule his lessons.

We will start with Turn, Kick, Reach:
Turn, Kick, Reach is a five consecutive day program taught to children, as young as ten months, what to do if they fell into the water. They learn to hold their breath and put their face in the water; swim to the steps and wall by kicking and MOST IMPORTANT, to turn around and swim back to where they fell into the water.

Hopefully he will graduate after the 5 days and we can continue on to the next program:
TKR Post-Grad is a small group of children who have graduated from our Turn, Kick, Reach program. We extend the skills they learned in TKR, making them familiar with all parts of the pool. (The skills they learned in TKR are reinforced and expanded to include extending their distance swimming, learning to swim from person to person, and learning how to swim from steps to wall, and wall to steps.) TKR is a prerequisite for this class. This class meets one day per week for eight weeks.

I will update day by day once we get started.

Summer here we come!!!

Comments:

  1. I'm sure Jax will love swimming! You'll get to enjoy it more when you can play in the pool with your *swimming* little man .
  2. That's great! I'm interested in the updates and to see how they teach these skills.
  3. We start on Monday! Every day M-F from 11-11:20 or 30 depending on his endurance. I can't wait.
  4. Oh, I think this is great, C! I took swimming lessons when I was very young. So young that I really don't ever remember not being able to swim. My parents always had boats and were really into water-skiing so I was a total water child! And then I married a man who didn't know how to swim as an adult... and it was so bizarre to me! He has since learned to swim and loves it, but it is very important to him that our child learn early... since he feels like he missed out on it for so much of his life.

Can't wait to hear all about it!

  5. I never learned how to swim. I taught myself how to float when I was about 8 at the local beach, using the shallowest part of the water. I can doggy paddle I gues sit is but that is only well enough to not drown. DH is a good swimmer and has offered to teahc me but when he does try to, it doersn't work well for us. I looked into swimming classes a couple of times and literally i was the oldest person by a solid 10-12 years. Not fun! So, this summer after I have my surgery, I may sign up for private classes or something. I try to swim under water but I am so bouyant currently that it doesn't work. That should change after mid-june

Looking forward to hearing about Jax's progress!!
  6. That's great, C! I hope it will make you feel better as your little one plays by the pool this summer.
  7. We start lessons today! I am really looking forward to it. We were out in the backyard yesterday and Jax is absolutely fearless by the pool, which is very scary. He was all over the place. Will update later to let you know how it goes....
  8. Good luck today! Take pictures!!!
  9. I'm curious to hear how it went/goes! I think its great you are going to have him take lessons so early especially if y'all have a pool of your own, I would be feeling the same way about his safety and feeling nervous with him running around even if you are right there.
  10. Oh man, I am soooo proud of Jax. He did amazing. I mean, he was crying almost the whole time, but he was happy and smiling after and even said he had fun! He learned how to hold his breath and kick his legs. He really did great. I can't wait to see how his skills progress by Friday. I have to take my camera tomorrow.
  11. That's awesome he learned to hold his breath! Is it a class where you are in the pool too or just on the side watching?
  12. I was just on the side watching.
  13. So he was probably like oh wow what is going on here. Awww how cute. I love things when I can watch J in her element ... especially when she doesn't know I'm watching ... too funny.
  14. I forgot to update yesterday, which was Day 2.

Again, he did really well. They actually let him go and he "swam" by himself to the steps. It was crazy to watch. Basically he floated with some slight kicking of his legs, while holding his breath. Pretty cool. He still cried the whole time and it was hard to watch, but I am so glad we're doing this. I am hoping his confidence improves and his fear decreases by the end of these lessons.

Today was canceled due to bad weather. Ugh! I hope the disruption in classes doesn't mess it up.
  15. Oh wow that must have been fun to see him float/kick on his own!! Go Jax! How many other kids are in the class?
  16. Yea, it was neat....and scary. It's actually not a class. They are private lessons. There are a few other kids in the pool at the same time having lessons with other instructors though, so all us moms are sitting on the sidelines together.
  17. C, we are signed up for classes at the YMCA starting on Monday. I'm glad to know you are going too, so we can talk about it. Cale is obviously tiny -- he is the minimum age at 6 months... but DH is insisting that we start him now... you know my ol hubby swam competitively from age 5 to 25, so he is evidently trying to have Cale relive his success.. lol. Anyway, it's just a mommy and me float around thingy, and I'll be in the warm pool with him. I think it will be fun!!! I'll let you know.

We did this when Jax was 8 months. It was cute! Definitely let me know what you think!

So today was Day 3. Jax swam to the side of the pool and grabbed onto the side and held on for 10 seconds. I got in with him so I could learn how to help him practice. It's crazy to see your baby completely under the water and not holding him. I swear I was on eggshells....

I am supposed to practice with him in the pool this afternoon and every day this weekend until we finish up on Monday. I would like to continue to practice with him all summer so that he can really learn to swim.

I have to find out how much another class is b/c I'd really love to keep this up. I was talking to a mom there today whose daughter is 3 and is a very good swimmer. She loves it. She jumps of the side and from a low diving board and swims across an olympic sized pool, front and back stroke. It's amazing. The girl is on her 4th set of lessons..... but I am impressed!!!
  19. Those statistics are really scary! 1 good thing with living in the UK is that hardly anyone has swimming pools in their back garden (or yard!).

Swimming lessons would be quite interesting though. As a kid I hated water and I don't want my 2 too feel scared of it like I did.

I am currently thinking of putting Sophie in for karate classes or something. Do you think she's too young? I just want her to learn self-defence etc but feel I may be a bit pushy starting her already. We would probably wait a good few months first, but it's still up in the air.

Anyway sounds like Jax enjoyed himself! It's definately a good idea to get him involved in this. Did mommy enjoy it too?
  20. Well the funny thing is that Jax totally does not seem to be enjoying himself. He is scared the whole time.....and cries. But once he's out, he's totally cool and says he had a good time and even wants to go back in. Strange kid.

As far as the Karate lessons, I think that is great. My husband is into Martial Arts and has done them on and off since childhood. We plan to send Jax to a Judo class (or something) when he is old enough. I think they might be a bit too young yet. Maybe 3??? Not quite sure.
  21. Ok Day 4: as far as I could see, J did not do as well. The instructor said he was doing well...he just needs to practice.

He swam to the side of the pool, but for some reason was using his arms today and it messed him up. He was sinking instead of laying there kicking. It was very scary for me to watch.....and he still cried the whole time.

Honestly, he doesn't like his instructor (I'm not too fond of her either). There is a man there that has helped with his lessons and J loves him....but it's not the person doing his lessons. The woman who does his lessons keeps passing him off to the guy whenever she can and personally I think it's distracting J and making him not trust her and deflecting from his lessons. I tried to say something, but she doesn't take it seriously. Needless to say, I'm not very happy with her. We get there and she is always either STILL finishing up her last lesson or chatting with some of the other moms or just sitting there eating. She makes us wait EVERY f'n time AND I think she speeds up J's lesson. She's lazy. UGH!!! Sorry rant over.
  22. I think it's great that you are doing lessons early with Jax, especially since you have your own pool.

Wow, a 3 year old who can do all that? N has never even been in a "real" pool. We have a little inflatable one for our back yard, and she likes it but has never had to hold her breath. We'd like to take her to a public pool this summer. Also, my SIL is a swim coach and lifeguard, so I'm hoping we might be able to have her help teach N to swim or at least recommend timing, classes, etc.

That really sucks that the instructor isn't doing her job! I'd be really angry because I'm sure private lessons aren't cheap! I'd definitely be finding someone else for any other lessons Jax moves on to. That's too bad that he cries the whole time. Do you think it's because you're not in the water with him?
  23. Margs, I've actually started going in the water with him for the second half of the lessons and he is ok when I'm holding him, but still cries a bit when he has to "swim".

I took him in our pool this morning to practice. I definitely think the more practice, the better. Guess what - he still cried. I think he just hates having his face under water. I'm sure it's scary for him. But, he did ok and we will keep practicing!!
  24. Hey, I understand that about having his face in the water. I hate getting my face in water and so does N. He should get used to it in time.
  25. We went in the pool for practice again yesterday and J did great!! He did not cry once (well except when it was time to get OUT of the pool!) He kept wanting to swim to the steps.....head under water and everything.

Today was Day 5 of the lessons..the last day. Jax graduated!!! Yay! My boy can turn, kick, and reach. I had to actually throw him in the pool. It was a bit crazy, but amazing to see him plop in, turn his little body and get to the side to save himself!!!

We have lots of practice in store for us. I have to make it a point to go in with him every day at least for the next few weeks so he doesn't forget.

  26. YAY Jax!!!!

  27. Thanks!

The funny thing is that now he isn't all gung-ho about going in the pool when we ask him. I guess that is a good thing b/c he would want to jump in there himself before. He had absolutely no fear. I think now he is at least a little bit cautious of the water. Makes things a lot easier for us!

My dad said when my brother and I were kids we cried through our entire swim lesson experience as well, but we ended up being fish. I mean, we pretty much lived in the water!! I hope my son ends up enjoying swimming as much as I did. We just have to keep on practicing.
  28. Yay, Jax! I just took ds to the pool yesterday for the 2nd time this summer. The first time, the water was too cold for him and he refused to even put his feet in. This time (at a different pool), the water was beautiful and after about 10 minutes of gentle persuasion (watching the water, touching the water, getting water on my hands and flicking it at him (he loves this in the bath), and putting his feet in the water) he eventually let me take him in & he had a blast. I think we were out there for about half an hour or so.

He thought it was really cool that I could blow bubbles in the water. He would giggle and grin and stare at my lips...but then he put his face in to try it and got water up his nose! Poor little guy!

I guess I should start with getting him to hold his breath instead of trying to blow bubbles... But I'll take it slowly and get him used to having fun in the pool before I start with any of that.
  29. That's awesome how much he learned in 5 days of lessons!!! Way to go!! Sounds like if you practice this summer, he'll be a real fish.

Jana ~ By the 4th or so time of going to the pool, it was like nothing to J ... so I bet a few more times and A will be the same way. Its like the playground after a few times it was like she had been going down slides her whole life lol.
  30. Ha, I'm sure you're right, Jessica! I just need to get him out there so we can splash around some more!
  31. I went with a friend to her neighborhood pool on Sunday and they had a baby pool there that was really nice and seemed to make her a lot more confident cause it was only 1 foot deep at the most and so she could walk around in it and got faster with walking in water, etc. Seems like the crazy crowded and busy waterpark near our house is a lot more overwhelming for her.

My main dislike is the prep time with sunscreen, etc lol.
  32. Today Jax could not get enough of the water. He loved it! Kept wanting to jump around, swim to the steps, splash, kick his legs, etc. It was great. He doesn't like to practice his "swim to the side and hang on" though, but that is one of the most important considering the side of the pool is where a child is probably more likely to fall in. We also practiced the "turn, kick, reach" but he isn't so great at it. I had to help him out b/c I got nervous of him being under too long and not moving forward. He was just kinda in the same spot kicking. Then he cried and cried when it was time to get out.
  33. Aww, it sounds like Jax is loving the water now!! Cale and I had our first "shrimp" lesson yesterday, and we both loved it. I really enjoyed getting out of the house early in the morning and having so much fun with him in the pool! I even talked my best friend into bringing her baby here (an hour away) to join us for the Monday classes. It will be even better to have them here with us!!!! Cale did a great job with the tiny tasks they gave him; we had to do things like throw a toy and have them "retrieve" it (kinda - while we helped), and we did lots of games and splashing stuff. It was too cute.

BTW, does class make jax sleepy? sheesh, my boy was worn out by the time we got home... he took 2 naps over 2 hours each yesterday!!! He also ate like a little hog!!
  34. I'm glad Jax decided he really likes to swim! I can't even imagine how wonderfully tan his skin is.

Sounds like I need to get DS in the pool. He's finally getting over his water issues, so I don't want to push it yet. I'm really looking forward to swimming with him though .
  35. That's so great that Jax is into swimming now! I'm sure it will take lots of practice, but the fact that he's enjoying the water is really important. You don't want him to be so afraid that he never learns to save himself.

    Great job!!!
  36. Just thought I'd update and say that we've been practicing with J and he loves to swim to the steps. He is getting better at swimming to the side of the pool too, but isn't too fond of jumping in and learning the "turn, kick, reach" which is probably the most important. But, at least he's enjoying the water. He never wants to get out of the pool! We have a large top step so he loves hanging out on the steps and playing.

Here is a picture of J before his swim lesson....
  37. What a cutie!
  38. It's great that he loves the water . He is such a cute little guy!!!
