Appalling sight of the day

So yesterday we’re driving to our “mommy and me”-type class and Jax and I take notice of this really cool car next to us because it looks like Flo from the Disney Pixar movie CARS. If you’ve been around for more than 5 minutes, you probably already know that my son is obsessed with this movie and all of the characters because I’m sure I’ve mentioned it…..oh maybe a few times. ;) Anyway, so we’re driving next to this car that looks like Flo except it’s darker green and in much worse condition. It’s pretty banged up and has grateful dead stickers all over the back. I notice there’s a kid in the front seat. It totally reminds me of the discussion we just had here about what age everyone will let their child sit up front. Meanwhile, I’m trying to figure out how old this kid is and trying to think back about how old I was when I was allowed and the car goes in front of us……and keeps driving in the direction of our class. I’m thinking to myself “no freakin’ way” and then the car turns into the parking lot. Yeah, turns out the kid is not even TWO YEARS OLD yet and was sitting in the front seat with no car seat. I was appalled. Are you?

Comments:

  1. OMG completely appalled!

Even in a car with no airbags, little kids don't belong in the front.

I am so happy that our county and the county adjacent have a huge no tolerance policy for unbuckled kids and such.
  2. That's awful! Eek!

Negligent, illegal, unsafe, ohh, I could just go on and on!

It's also really sad to me that the parents felt obliged to take their toddler to a mommy & me class but won't buckle him/her up!!!

    Did you say anything?
  3. That poor kid! The parents are nuts. Gavin may hate me, but he will be in a 5-point harness until he's too big for one, and he'll still be strapped into the back seat until he's big enough to ride in front (unless there is no back seat, but airbags will be off and he'll STILL be in a carseat). I would have had to say something to them.

I wish everybody could pass out tickets for that stuff.
  4. Why are people so stupid?!?!?!

I agree with Jana - why take them to a mommy & me class if you don't care enough to put them in a carseat???
  5. Totally!!! OMG... I definitely wouldn't have been able to keep from saying anything to that parent.

I've called the police a couple of times on the interstate when I've seen young children playing around on the front seat--unbuckled. It absolutely floors me to think what could happen to these children in a split second, if a car were to weave into their lane or they go smashing into a car in front of them... or whatever. Some parents just do not deserve to have such precious cargo in their care!!! Argh!
  6. Yeah, I don't understand how taking your kid to class is more important than using proper transportation and ensuring their safety. Makes absolutely no sense!!! I don't think she normally drives this car because I have never seen it before......and no, I did not say anything. I couldn't even look at her, to be honest. I had to keep my distance because I was so disgusted. The one and only explanation I could possibly think of, and I could be waaaaaaay off, is that she is foreign. Maybe the rules/laws are different in different countries???? I don't know....but I realize now I should have said something, especially if that is the case. Although I can't imagine she doesn't know this.....
  7. That is awful! My neighbor got ticketed for not having her 2 year old in a car seat because SHE GOT IN AN ACCIDENT! It was just a fender bender, but her child still ended up with stitches, and fortunately not worse! (This was like, 15 years ago).
  8. it is CRAZY to see that & soo sad for the kid...no matter what country they could be from they all have car seats, think britax is made in europe...anyway my neighbor who is pregnant again drives around with her maybe 1 1/2 yr old & 6-7 month old in her van with no car seats in it at all & i have called the cops & they say i have to have proof even though they looked in her van in her driveway & saw no car seats in it, they did not see her so there is nothing i can do & i did mention she is pregnant again right? i have tried to talk to her & even offered her one of my back up carseats & she refused saying she does not drive far & that nothing will happen...anyway it is crazy & soo upsetting to see it happen all over.
if i had seen her i would have said something to her, i do not care...the child will suffer when they are hurt or even worse killed.
  9. Actually different countries do have different requirements regarding child safety devices and they are definitely not required everywhere. I do think this woman is from a country that requires car seats though......she was just being incredibly irresponsible.
  10. of a time that I was involved in an accident. The accident was determined to be the other party's fault, but the hideous thing about it was that they didn't have their 9 month or so old baby buckled in and had the nerve to come up to my car screaming that I could have killed their baby! Uhh, no, you could have killed your baby because YOU should have had her in a carseat, moron!!
