Keeping child’s carseat rear-facing after 1st year

Most people I know look forward to changing their child’s carseat to forward facing as soon as the child turns 1. I did too, until I did my research. I’m pretty sure most parents know that once your child is at least 1 year of age and at least 20 pounds, he can ride forward-facing. However, according to the AAP it is best for him to ride rear-facing until he reaches the highest weight or height limit allowed by the car safety seat. I have seen crash test videos and it is unbelievable the difference carseat positioning can make during impact. My son is super tall (off the charts) so he may outgrow the height limit before we want to turn him around. He’s got a ways to go with the weight so until his head starts inching up too far at the top of the seat, we won’t worry about it.
