Well, we took the plunge and decided to go on a vacation with our little one. Some people were skeptical and thought we’d have a very tough time. Others said it was the best time to travel with an infant because they are not mobile yet. After going away, I’d have to say I agree with the latter. I was very pleasantly surprised. Our son behaved wonderfully. He slept the entire 7 hour flight + the remaining travel time…layover, shorter flight, train ride, etc. I think he really enjoyed all the new sights and sounds. Life at home seems pretty mundane in comparison. The main things I would advise for travelling with a baby would be the following:
- bring enough diapers for a few days and then buy the rest at your destination
- bring a change of clothes for you and baby incase of accidents
- if flying, make sure baby is sucking during take-off and landing
- it’s not necessary to drug your child – I really think the sound and motion of the plane puts them to sleep naturally
- bring 2 small toys to keep baby occupied
- try to stay as close to your at home routine as possible
- ask about crib rentals ahead of time, as well as highchair availability at restaurants and even possibly stroller rental (the security at the airport is a PITA!!! – the less equiptment you have, the better).
- bring a wearable baby carrier if possible, it is soooooo much easier
- don’t worry too much about anything – whatever you need is available anywhere else, I’m sure
- just take things as they come, realize it is a different type of travelling when you bring a baby, and HAVE FUN!!!
